Wis. correctional officer accused of beating inmate had prior criminal record

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A Milwaukee County correctional officer accused of beating a juvenile inmate without cause was convicted of a Class A misdemeanor that did not show up on a background check.

FOX News reports that the officer, Sanjay Adell, 38, will be terminated from the department after he left a 15-year-old inmate with cuts inside his mouth and swelling to his face.

“This is an isolated and very unfortunate situation, but we’re taking the proper action to make sure this individual is no longer here,” Hector Colon, Health and Human Services Director, said.

The officer claimed the inmate took a threatening stance toward him, but surveillance video shows differently. Adell is shown talking to the inmate, before grabbing him by the arm, which then escalates into a physical confrontation.

Colon said he was not aware of any prior problems with the officer.

A search of the officer’s belongings turned up a firearm inside his backpack, which was in a secure part of the facility.

The case is under review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
